GENRE RESEARCH

The genre of my short film is TEENAGE DRAMA:

Teenage drama: This genre is a sub-genre of the genre drama, is mainly focused on teenage and young adults characters. Teen dramas incorporates more than one story arc connecting with various episodes (in series), the young characters need to deal with the dramatic lives: romances, family, friendship, etc. while they face a series of issues. In addiction, some teen dramas are based with other themes such as: action, fantasy, sci-fi, and adventure which became really successful, for example: Stranger thing (Sci-fi and fantasy), Spinning out 2020 (Action), etc. This genre was mainly standing out in the 1990s, especially with the popularity of the show called Beverly Hills 90210, this show started to gain attention and it reached out to a previously ignored demographic, the characters try to deal with school life challenges, college and early adulthood. It also focuses on problems overtaken between family, friendship, and relationships, in addition, it also highlights social issues that teenagers experience 'in the real life'. Some well known 90s teenage films are: Clueless (1995), House party (1990), 10 things I hate about you (1999), The baby-sitters club (1995), etc. This genre is targeted to teens, but young adults are also very attracted to this genre, because it represents their lives, and it could position them in that specific situation.

My opening scene is going to portrait these two teen drama sub-genres: youth drama and high school drama.

Youth drama: This drama focuses on the social dilemma of the main character life, in which the main character's experiences difficulties. This genre is really popular for teenagers since it is a representation of their lifes. I.e: The fault in our stars.

High school drama: this genre is mainly about teenagers and young adults life experiences in school, college, holidays, etc. This sub-genre became really popular in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, which the main characters were most of the time a girl. I.e Mean girls.

Musical: Musicals film is a subgenre of musicals, in which songs by the characters are connected with the narrative, and sometimes they are accompanied with dance choreographies.

The musical film genre was a natural development of the stage musical. The biggest difference between musical film and stage musicals is the use of lavish backgrounds and locations that would be unfeasible to make in a theater since they are very elaborate.

Directors of this genre:

-Kay Cannon who directed the saga ‘High pitch’.

-Damien Chacelle who directed ‘La la land’.

-Randal Kleiser who directed ‘Grease’.

-Jeffrey Hornaday who directed the saga ‘Teen beach movie’.

-Kenny Ortega who directed various musical films for Disney Channel such as ‘The descendants’ and ‘High school musical 3’.

-Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen who directed together ‘Singing in the rain’.

-Jon M .Chu, director of ‘Step up’.
